Hello,
My name is Sam Freed and I'm a 4th year at Cal Poly SLO. I'm majoring in Computer Engineering and minoring in Mathematics. I took my first computer graphics class with Dr. Wood last winter and have been excited about pursuing computer graphics as a career.
I'm looking forward to improving the existing computer graphics pipeline and adding more cool features to it. I also hope to help out with any of the embedded systems related aspects of the AUV.
I can't wait to meet and work with everyone!

Hi all!
I am Wentao, a senior at Pomona College majoring in computer science and mathematics. I am very excited to be part of the ICEX team this year. I am working on detection algorithms that automatically identifies shipwrecks in sonar scans obtained by the AUV.
This will be my first time working with robots at sea, and I am looking forward to this new experience. I can't wait to immerse myself in this multidisciplinary project!

Hi,
As a member of both the Cal Poly Women’s Water Polo team and the Cal Poly Water Ski team, I am very much a water person. I grew up in “Sunny” San Diego right by the beach, so I am very comfortable in the ocean as well. As you could probably guess, I am extremely excited to get some hands-on experience with software in the Mediterranean!
Also, I caught the travel bug on my trip to Ireland last summer,
so I cannot wait to go abroad again and see what Malta has in-store for my team
and me!
I am looking forward to another great ICEX team trip to Malta in 2017. I love all the amazing dynamic learning that happens during international multi-disciplinary research projects and I look forward to seeing how the new team works together. I am looking forward to improving our reconstruction pipeline and enhancing the computer graphics visualizations of the wrecks. - Zoë

Hi,
I am a senior software engineering student at Cal Poly. I love to travel; last year, I studied abroad in Ireland, so I'm excited to go to Malta and explore more of Europe! I just took intro to graphics, and I'm really looking forward to doing more projects with that. I did robotics all through high school (FTC), so I'm also interested in that part of the project.
I'm am a total water and boat person. I used to do swim team and water polo, and I grew up white water rafting a lot. I think spending time on a boat and in the Mediterranean is going to be a blast. I hope to try diving or snorkeling while I'm there since the waters are so blue and clear.
A few other hobbies of mine include surfing, camping, being outdoors, exploring new cultures and trying new things (especially food), and aerial silks. :)

Hi! I'm Jane, a junior at Harvey Mudd and a member of the 2017 ICEX team. My favorite pastimes include working with robots and traveling, so needless to say I am very excited to be a part of this project.
I will be working on probabilistic route planning algorithms for the AUV, in order to establish efficient paths for finding and mapping shipwrecks near the coast of Malta.

Hello and welcome to ICEX 2017!
I have been a part of ICEX for many years, but my excitement level for this project never seems to diminish. We have a great team, and the potential to break some technological barriers. Our new AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) should arrive any day now, and will provide us with a new side-scan sonar system that will enable us to find and map coastal shipwrecks. I especially look forward to deploying the AUV in unexplored parts of the Malta coast.
I look forward to meeting all the Cal Poly students in January,
Chris

Hello!
Welcome to ICEX 2017! Students from Harvey Mudd College and Cal Poly will be heading to Malta in summer 2017 with faculty members to deploy underwater robots with the purpose of mapping coastal shipwrecks and developing new technology for marine archeology. Being located in the Mediterranean Sea between continental Europe and northern Africa, the island nation of Malta and its coastal waters are home to a large number of historical wrecks. Organized through a joint International Computer Engineering Experience (ICEX), the students will collaborate with Dr. Timmy Gambin, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Classics and Archaeology, University of Malta and faculty members from Cal Poly and Harvey Mudd College in addition to further international partners. The project goals are to develop an Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) system for intelligent shipwreck search, mapping and visualization. The 2017 ICEX team includes Harvey Mudd students: Jeff Rutledge (Engineering sophomore), Jane Wu (CS junior), Wentao Yuan (CS senior at Pomona) and Cal Poly students: Sam Freed (CPE senior), Amy Lewis (SE junior) and Roslyn Patrick-Sunnes (SE senior) joined by Harvey Mudd College faculty member, Professor Christopher Clark of Engineering and Cal Poly faculty member, Associate Professor Zoë Wood of Computer Science.
